Yesterday in class we started our discussion on substance abuse and substance dependence. We watched a documentary on Lawrence, who was an alcoholic and later died in the episode. To start our unit off we defined some key terms that we will use throughout the chapter. Please define the following terms and give examples from Lawrence's life.
Substance dependent
Codependent
Trigger
Withdraw
Tolerance
*To receive full credit you must define each term and give an example.(It does not have to be the exact definition I gave you. Shorten them up if you can.) *

Substance dependent is when the user needs the substance to survive. Lawrence's substance dependent was his Vodka. Codependent is people who are effected by the person's actions. His codependent's were: His mom, his brothers, and Wendy. Triggers are events that cause the person to turn to a substance to fill a void. Some of Lawrence's triggers are his abusive father, when his mother went bankrupt, and when he got a divorce. Withdraw is when someone needs the substance to live and doesn't get, and they start to have serious symptoms. Intervention didn't show Lawrence's withdrawl.Tolerence is when you do something enough and it starts effecting you less and less. Lawrence had a high tolerence because he drank every day.

In Intervention, the documentary on Lawrence, Lawrence was an alcoholic who was substance dependant on it. Substance dependant means that Lawrence had become tolerant to drinking compulsive amounts of the substance. When Lawrence was tolerant to the alcohol levels the he could intake, it took more of the substance to have an effect on his body. If Lawrence stopped drinking altogether all at once he would go through withdrawal and die because his body depended on the alcohol. During withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting and having fevers and seizures occur. At the end of the movie, Lawrence did die because of the problems the drinking had caused. The people in Lawrence’s life such as his mom, Rita, and his friend, Wendy, were codependent on him. Depending on Lawrence’s behavior, his codependents moods were determined. When Lawrence had a good day Wendy and Rita were happy, but when he started to go downhill, they also had a bad time. Lawrence had triggers in his life to push him to the state that he was in. Triggers are traumatic times that make a pattern of abuse occur. Lawrence’s triggers happened when his abusive stepfather hurt him and his mother. He had to take care of his family and help pay and support them. After Lawrence had been married and divorced, he took GHB to become bigger but he had to drink so that he would fall asleep to see the results of it. Because of the hardships in Lawrence’s life, triggers were pulled and he ended up becoming an alcoholic depending on others who became codependent on him in return.

Substance dependence is when you use a substance enough that you build up a tolerance and suffer from withdrawals if you dont use that substance.Lawrence's substance that he depends on is vodka. He drinks up to a liter and half a day. He is able to drink this much because of the tolerance he has built up. If lawerence stops drinking, he has seizures from withdrawals. A co-dependent is a person who's emotions/feelings are governed by another persons actions/behavior. Lawrence's mom, brothers, and friend wendy are all co-dependents of Lawrence. A trigger is a traumatic event that triggers a pattern of abuse in ones life. Lawrence has had a few triggers in his life. The main trigger was his abusive father who not only beat his mother, but lawrence as well. Other triggers were lawrence getting cancer, and his mother going bakrupt forcing him to provide for the whole family. A withdraw is when a person who abuses a substance suddenly stops using it. Lawrences withdraws were not shown in intervention, but it did say that when he stopped drinking he would have grand mal seizures and had had three already. Tolerance is when your body adjust to a substance requiring larger doses to get the desired effect. Lawrence's body built up a ridiculous tolerance to alcohol, specifically vodka. Lawrence was able to frink mug after mug full of pure vodka all day and remain concious. -Ben Small
Lawrence the man from the intervention was substance dependent. Substance dependence is the uncontrollable use of a substance that can cause withdrawl. Lawrence's substance dependence is his alcohol. He drinks vodka in huge amounts at a time. Co-dependent is when the way you acts effects someone else and controls how you feel. Lawrence's co-dependents are his mom, his brothers, his coworkers, and Wendy. A trigger is the event in your life that causes your abuse to begin. The trigger for Lawrence were his violent step father. His father beat his mother and beat him and eventually his mother left and he was forced to raise his brothers. Also he was divorced eighteen months after his marriage. Withdrawl is when you completely stop your abuse with alcohol or drugs or whatever you are using. It also causes symptoms like a fever, vomiting, and seizures. Lawrence has had seizures before and after his intervention he had so much withdrawl he relapsed and died. Tolerance is the the ability to adjust to a lot of something like alcohol so you can take larger amounts so you can get the same effect. Lawrence's tolerance for alcohol was very high because he was able to drink huge cups of alcohol all day and barely be affected. He was getting use to the amount of alcohol he drank each day and believed he was not even drinking alcohol.

Substance dependence is the use of a substance, such as alcohol, that leads to a tolerance or withdrawal. For Lawrence, he was substance dependent on vodka, which he would drink lots of every day. His dependence on vodka led others to depend on him emotionally. These people, known as co-dependents, are dependent on someone’s behavior to govern their own. In Lawrence’s life, the people who were co-dependent of him were his brothers, his mother, and good friend Wendy. This dependence is normally brought on by key traumatic events in one’s life, called triggers. Lawrence had several triggers that led to his dependence on alcohol. These events include a violent step-dad that beat him and his mother, bankruptcy in the family, and a divorce. Because he drank so much all the time, Lawrence built up a tolerance to the vodka. Tolerance is when the body gets used to the constant amounts of something so that more is required to reach the same affects. Lawrence reluctantly tried to get help, but was unsuccessful. He could not handle the withdrawals, and he soon died. Withdrawal is the symptoms that come when a person stops taking or decreases the amount of dosage taken. These symptoms include fever, vomiting, seizures, and hallucinations. Unfortunately, Lawrence drank so much and was in complete denial about it that he refused to get help, which eventually led to his death.

Substance dependent- is being dependent on a substance for survival. Lawrence was dependent on Vodka. He drank so much Vodka that it was killing him, but the same thing he couldnt live with he also couldnt live without.
Codependent- is when one person's emotional state is dependent on another persons actions. Lawrence had many people in his life that loved and cared for him very much, but that did not stop his drinking. His mother, his brothers, the VPs of his company, and his employee Wendy were all codependent on Lawrence's actions. When he was good they were happy, when he was doing badly they were sad.
Trigger- is something that happens in someones life that could cause them to do something else. Lawrence had many triggers in his life that could have contributed to his drinking problem. When he was younger his dad left him, his step dad beat him severly, and his mother left him for a month with his abuser. He grew up, got married, then got a divorce, started using a drug to make him bigger, the drug was taken off the market. That was the ultimate trigger that led Lawrence to Vodka.
Withdraw- is a period when a substance abuser suddenly stops using. Lawrence's withdraws were not shown in the episode.
Tolerance- is the leval at which a person can abuse a substance so severly that the effects can become almost absolete in the abuser. Lawrence drank a liter and a half of straight vodka on a daily basis. He had built up such a high tolerence that the vodka was not giving him the effects he desired.

In our class, we began talking about substance abuse, mainly alcohol. In the video we watched that would help show us what someone who was addicted to a substance would look like, we saw a man by the name of Lawrence, and how he became addicted to alcohol, mainly vodka. In that class, we also had some terms to define, and see how these apply to Lawrence. Substance dependent is the first one. This means that you abused a substance so much, that not only do you think you need it all the time, your body needs that substance to now survive. This happened with Lawrence because he built up a tolerance against the vodka, so he needed a lot more to keep him alive. Tolerance is another term, which means that when take something enough times, and it is the same amount each time, your body will then get used to that substance, and that amount that you constantly used. Another term that we had to learn is codependent, and you can clearly see that in the video. Codependence means that when the drug user effects the people around them, and they could effect their attitude, or maybe their personality. You could see this in the video as one of Lawrence’s workers every waking moment was bent on trying to keep him alive, and however he felt, was almost the same feeling the worker had. Triggers are another thing that was very evident in the video with Lawrence. Triggers can be tragic happenings in someones life, that makes them turn to a substance to help them cope with their problem. Lawrence’s trigger was mostly due to his father beating his mother, and even Lawrence himself. The last term we had to define is withdraw. Withdraw has to do with pretty much giving up the substance you are using, and you body cant handle going without that substance, which can cause seizures or other things can happen to your body. Lawrence had drank so much vodka, that even when he would go a few minutes without a drink, his hands would shake uncontrollably, and he couldn’t even function properly, and that is why he had the worker helping him.
Substance dependence is when you build up a tolerance to a substance and when you stop taking it you suffer from withdrawals. Lawrence's depending substance is Vodka. He built up a tolerance to alcohol by drinking more and more everyday. He ended up drinking up to a liter and a half of vodka a day. Lawrence suffers from withdrawals when he stops drinking, as serious as seizures. A co-dependent is a person whose emotions and actions are altered by the emotions and actions of another person. In this case, Lawrence's mom, lover friend, and his family are the co-dependents. If Lawrence is having a good day, they are. Vice versa. Trigger is some traumatic event that happens in someones life. The result is that persons addiction. Lawrence's trigger was his abusive father that beat him and his mom, his stress from providing everything for his family, and maybe even the gov't stop producing a muscle enhancement substance he took. Withdrawal is when your body is so used to something, that when you stop taking it, it reacts. Lawrence had seizures. Tolerance is when your body adjust to the amount of something you are taking, therefore you have to keep taking more and more to get the same effect. Lawrences tolerance is obvious. The man is drinking liters of vodka a day and is still sober.
Lawrence was a man who had a troubled childhood that led to a life of abusing alcohol. He drank in excess of 1.5 liters per day. Lawrence developed liver disease and his life was in danger during the span of the study and intervention. Lawrence was also in deep denial and did not acknowledge that his life was in danger. Lawrence had also over the years become physically dependent on alcohol meaning that if he were to stop drinking entirely he would more then likely die. He would specifically go through a period of withdrawal which could consist of vomiting, general sickness, weak muscles, irritability, and possibly in Lawrence’s case grand mal seizures. A trigger is what drove a person to start relying on a substance to cope with events in one’s life. For Lawrence it was his abusive childhood and the divorce with his wife. Lawrence’s behavior caused the people in his environment to become codependent on his well being. Meaning that whatever he does affects everyone around him and their moods. At Lawrence’s state he had a high tolerance for the amount of alcohol he drank, so in order to get the desired effect of a buzz he had to drink excessive amount of alcohol. Lawrence’s behavior also left him dependent on his assistant who gave up her free time to babysit him while he was drunk. All of this caused great emotional buildup on his family and friends who eventually staged an intervention for him that was briefly successful. After giving up on rehab Lawrence died soon after.

In the documentary, Intervention, Lawrence is substance dependent. Which means he cannot live without a certain substance, in his case it was alcohol. There are certain events in Lawrence's life which actually had an influence on his addiction to alcohol. These are called triggers. Lawrence's triggers started in his childhood when his father was abusive, then his mother went bankrupt, an lastly he got a divorce. Lawrence has tolerance to alcohol, which means over the years he has been so used to drinking it doesn't really effect him anymore, which causes problems. There are also people in Lawrence's life that are called codependents, which are basically people who are around him and are effected by him and his action with the substance abuse. These people are his mom, brothers, employers, and a close friend named Wendy. Throughout the documentary Lawrence doesn't show withdrawls, which means the person that is substance dependent or has an addiction just stops cold turkey and then they could die because they cant live without the substance. Lawrence was in denial about his substance dependence, which resulted in his death.

Lawrence was an alcoholic and was substance dependent on Vodka. when someone is substance dependent that mean they depend on something for survival. with out this substance they could began having withdraws.A with draw is when someone needs a substance so bad that it causes their body to becom eill and have serious problems because they dont have the substance. We also talked about codependants and these are people that go threw the ups and downs with the substance abuser. Lawrence's co dependents were his mother Rita, co worker Wendy, VP of his company Milassa, and his brothers. the triggers that most likly caused Lawrences abuse was his step father abusing him and his mother, him being toold he has cancer, his wife leaving him, and other things.
